When two people exchange friendly physical contact, potent physiological and psychological mechanisms are set in motion. On the physical plane the body produces the hormone oxytocin. This is the same biochemical mother’s produce while breastfeeding to create a lifelong bond with their child. Oxytocin has the effect of producing feelings of pleasure and relaxation.

Research studies show that oxytocin affects people psychologically by increasing acts of trust and empathy, emotions which greatly facilitate social interactions.

In one such study two groups of participants were asked to play a strategy game where opponents needed to trust each other in order to succeed. One group received a nasal spray of oxytocin while the other was given a placebo. The group given the oxytocin was significantly more apt to trust their opponents during the game.

Human touch has also been shown to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, decrease blood pressure, improve mood and even boost the immune system. Whether its a handshake a hand on the shoulder, or a hug, sharing human contact can be a powerful way of building trust and cultivating your social landscape.
